EIGER DREAMS – It’s Happening – We’re attempting the North Face! And you can be part of it all!

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

EIGER DREAMS

Years ago I picked up a book by John Krakauer called Eiger Dreams. And so it began, a life-time dream to climb one of the most formidable challenges in the alpine arena – the Great North Face of the Eiger. I am proud to say that this dream is turning into reality this April when we make an attempt on the Great Face. Here’s the background and intro to what happens next and how you can be a part of it all!

An couple excerpts from his book – “The trickiest moves on any climb are the mental ones, the psychological gymnastics that keep terror in check, and the Eiger’s grim aura is enough to rattle anyone’s poise… Needless to say, all of this makes the North Face of the Eiger one of the most widely coveted climbs in the world.”

MOUNTAIN INSPIRATION

Since that day I have climbed many mountains and have been inspired by many people.  I owe much of my alpine dreams, success and, well, survival to my life long friend and partner Gary Falk.  Gary, and people like my brother Todd Walther who began it all for me, Ryan Ernst who I traveled the world with on many epic trips, Josh Morris who took it to an international scale, and many others have taught me some of the most valuable lessons in life as we climbed in the Tetons and around the world testing our physical and psychological limits.

CHALLENGE, GRAND DYNAMICS AND THE GRAND ADVENTURE

This element of challenge is one that I have lived and taught through Grand Dynamics and our business of adventure and experiential learning in the corporate arena. And it is a driving force for me and one of the main reasons I am so attracted to the culture and environment of Jackson Hole. As a side note, YOU can come climb the Grand Teton with Gary and I and a team of inspired individuals this year in our Grand Adventure program which opens enrollment on March 8th. Check it out~ The Grand Adventure 2012.

MENTORS AND PARTNERS

Now there are climbing partners, and there are mentors and there are those you aspire to be like. One alpinist that I have aspired to be like, and to one day be good worthy enough to call a partner, is Stephen Koch. Koch has been a linchpin of Teton Mountaineering and snowboard mountaineering world wide. His feats are simply amazing. You can watch is movie trailer about snowboarding on the 7 summits to get an idea of who he is and what he had done.

In the past few years Koch and I have climbed the North Ridge of the Grand, on-sighted a unknown route on Sentinel Turret and have had a few awesome trips to Cody to nail first ascents on ice routes. One thing is for sure, Koch is has it together when it comes to safe, fast, strong and efficient climbing in the mountains.

KOCH AND GRAND DYNAMICS INSPIRATION

As some of you may know, Koch has been a featured speaker for Grand Dynamics and aligned with our goal of inspiring people to do great things. And he does so very well. We have delivered mountain seminars together, team building events, and he has kicked off keynote speeches that left people awestruck at our events.

ITS BOOKED – and HAPPENING APRIL 13th

And after years of climbing, falling, sweating, screaming, navigating and dedicating much of my life to the mountains, I am finally at a place to make an attempt at something this big, challenging and frightening.

Last week we officially confirmed our flights. It’s happening. I am departing April 9th from Jackson to Zurich, and with the prayer for good weather and conditions, we will make an attempt on the 13th of April. Mark your calendars! And I AM PSYCHED!

OVERVIEW OF THE CLIMB of the EIGER NORTH FACE

If you happen to be unfamiliar with the North Face, you can read about it on the wiki overview of the Eiger North Face.  There was even a big movie made about it that came out in 2008, you can watch that here: North Face Movie Link  Surely I will be writing and posting more on this, so subscribe to the rss feed for updates.

SPONSORSHIP and CONTRIBUTION to a CAUSE

We are seeking sponsorship for our climb and are offering a variety of ways to be a part of our experience so that we can share in the adventure together with you.  First off, we will be writing and taking photos and also carrying spot technology so you can monitor our progress on the climb!

For corporate sponsors, please contact us about speaking or programming around the climb and sponsorship benefits. For individual contributors, we want this climb to have a greater meaning than just supporting our adventure. This is part of my goal of philosophical adventure travel in life.  Adventure with a purpose, and a way to contribute to the greater good.

For this reason I am offering that a percentage of your choosing can go toward the charity benefit of your choice on behalf of Grand Dynamics and this Eiger North Face expedition. You can be involved in our climb and support a cause for the greater good.  One of our main supporting causes right now is the 100 girls in 100 days campaign which I have been supporting since my trip to Kenya in December.  If you want to be a part of that and support that cause, you can donate to Grand Dynamics and we will contribute toward that cause in whatever percentage you would like.

Contact me today to find our more details and our sponsorship posting will be posted soon with additional details. Just email info at granddynamics dot com!

Until then…. LIVE YOUR ADVENTURE

Life is an Adventure

Monday, December 12th, 2011

Hey Everyone,

Take a look at this youtube clip I just watched. People are Awesome

It sure is amazing to watch how adventurous people are living their lives these days. It brings me back to one of my favorite quotes…”If you’re not living on the edge, you are taking up to much space” (unknown) I had to watch this clip twice because I was in awe the first time I saw it. Hope you enjoy!

Gaining Respect For The Power Of The Rocks

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Below is an article published by the NY Times in which Josh Morris (GDI’s International Program Director) is featured in. Congrats Josh on making it Big Time! Enjoy!

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND — Locals know the Crazy Horse Buttress in this mountainous region of northwest Thailand for the monks who dwell here and the decent bat hunting. Foreigners increasingly know it as one of the best places for rock climbing in the country.

Noppadon Uppakham, a k a Taw, right, sets up an approach on the Crazy Horse Buttress.

Like many places in Asia, Thailand is gradually transforming itself into a destination for climbing as enthusiasts move beyond the traditional mainstays of Colorado and California. The East’s dynamic economies and relatively low costs are luring Western workers who make Asia their home and tourists who seek adventure. Both groups are bringing their passion for the sport with them.

Satisfying the demand are people like Taw, a 28-year-old Thai who is one of the area’s most experienced rock-climbing guides. Taw, whose full name is Noppadon Uppakham, got his start by climbing coconut trees as a child. For much of the past decade, he has been working to develop rock-climbing routes in Thailand, China and the Philippines.

I arranged to meet him for a day of climbing. Soft-spoken and slight of build, Taw picked me up from the airport and we stopped briefly by his shop downtown to get fitted for some equipment, including a harness, shoes and a helmet. During the 45-minute drive toward the surrounding hills, I learned a lot, about Taw and about climbing — I’m an utter novice; this was my first climb. One gruesome anecdote in particular stuck in my mind.

About two years ago, Taw was leading a caving expedition. In the darkness of a cavern, he made out the body of a young man in a pool of blood. A 26-year-old American had fallen to his death a day earlier, after climbing solo without harnesses or ropes. There wasn’t any question about what had happened: The man had set up a digital camera to capture his stunt on video. Five minutes after his fall, he briefly awoke. “No one could hear his screams,” Taw said.

Serious climbers swear that with the right equipment, partners and training the risks of such calamities can be minimized.

Ted Rinquest, a 44-year-old American, moved here eight years ago. Now retired from software engineering, he frequents Crazy Horse four or five times a week, where I saw him explaining his method. I later ran into him at the climbing shop, where he said he had never had an injury more serious than a twisted ankle. “I push as hard as I can,” he said. “Injuries that do happen are largely climber error.”

Some advice is common sense. “If I shout ‘rocks,’ don’t look up,” Taw said at one point. Other guidance is less intuitive. It took me several tries to perfect the double-eight follow-through knot that was tied to my waist and kept me suspended 50 meters, about 165 feet, above the rocky surface later that day as I prepared to rappel downward in a state of extreme fear.

Fear does not seem to be an issue for some expert climbers. Alex Honnold, a 26-year-old Californian, for example, possesses the skill, strength and guts that have allowed him, with no equipment other than a chalk bag and his shoes, to climb some of Yosemite National Park’s most austere granite walls, soaring hundreds of meters straight upward with cracks hardly wide enough for a finger tip to ease him along. This year his feats put him on the cover of National Geographic and he was profiled in a segment on “60 Minutes .”

Another American, Dean Potter, 39, does much the same thing. But after his free solo climbs, he jumps wearing a winged suit that resembles a flying squirrel and parachutes to safety. One of his most harrowing climbs was 2,000 meters up a mountain in Switzerland, followed by a three-minute glide.

For most climbers, though, the action includes much less risk and the goals are much more humble.

As Taw reached adulthood, his parents were divorced and he had no money. He joined the army at 17 for two years and saved some cash. He began university to study sports education but found himself skipping classes and dropped out.

His life took a major turn when he met Josh Morris, a native of Salt Lake City. Mr. Morris had moved to Chiang Mai in 1999 to teach English. He began dating Taw’s sister, Khaetthaleeya Uppakham, a rising star in the Thai climbing scene who competed internationally. In 2002, the couple established Chiang Mai Rock Climbing Adventures , which offers climbing and caving expeditions and classes for individuals and groups.

It wasn’t long before Taw, who had little experience, joined the outfit. Now he’s the head instructor at the school, which employs 20 people. “Climbing has taught me a lot,” he said. “It’s taught me English. It’s taught me to trust equipment. It’s taught me to trust people.”

Mr. Morris initially had hoped to attract more Thais to the sport. But the expense of the sport means it is largely the domain of the upper middle class and beyond the means of many.

Meanwhile, business appears to be booming among the legions of foreigners who live here or pass through on vacations. Gaston Schmitz, 30, moved here more than three years ago and works for a nongovernmental organization. Climbing in his native Netherlands was limited to a wall at the gym, but now he’s a regular at Crazy Horse. “I don’t ever want to go back to plastic,” he said.

Bram Whillock, 28, has been jaunting around the world’s premier rock-climbing locations. He spent time this year in Yangshuo, China, where he had concerns about safety at the climbing sites, and in Kalymnos, Greece, where he said there was little to do except climb and go to the beach.

He prefers Chiang Mai, population about a million, with its numerous temples and active nightlife. “There’s a life here outside of climbing,” he said.

Nearly two years ago, Denali Barron, originally from Colorado, joined the climbing school in Chiang Mai to foster programs with student groups. For her, climbing is a means of gaining confidence, and she equates that initial step over the edge with big changes in life, like starting a new job or living with a family while studying abroad.

My first big step with Taw was a 22-meter climb up and down a vertical wall of rock. It was challenging, but more so psychologically than physically. I was new to the equipment and maintain a healthy fear of heights.

At lunchtime, Taw brought me spicy chicken from a local restaurant and explained how we would be spending the rest of the day: Rappelling down a dark 50-meter shaft into the Anxiety State Crisis Cave, as it is known here. This was where Taw discovered the body of the fallen climber two years ago.

I stood at the top of the precipice harnessed up. Taw explained that he wouldn’t be able to see me after the first few meters and warned that the rock surface would disappear for the last 10 meters, causing me to dangle in the darkness during the final descent.

My palms burst into a cold sweat and I briefly thought I would politely decline the adventure. But I remembered Taw’s words. You have to trust the equipment. You have to trust other people.

I took the plunge. Five minutes later, I found myself at the bottom of the cave thrilled that I hadn’t missed the chance.

An Outstanding Venue with a compelling history:

Treasure Island California is host the newest division of Grand Dynamics International and the perfect destination for experiential training and corporate events. Treasure Island is literally the “treasure” of the San Francisco Bay Area waiting to be discovered. “T.I.” as we refer to it, is located right next to Yerba Buena Island between the East Bay and San Francisco, and is only a five-minute ride from downtown SF.

Boasting incredible resources, astonishing views, playing fields, space, and a rich history, Treasure Island is the perfect venue for an off-site group event!

Treasure Island, named after the novel of the same name by Robert Louis Stevenson who lived in San Francisco in 1879, was artificially built for the World’s Fair Golden Gate International Exposition in 1939.  Treasure Island was originally planned for and used as an airport for Pan American World Airways flying boats. During World War II, Treasure Island became part of a US Naval Base and served largely as an electronics and radio communications training school and as the major Navy departure point for sailors in the Pacific.

From the late 1980s and onward, Treasure Island’s old aircraft hangers served as sound stages used in film and television productions. Numerous pictures starring Robin Williams were filmed on the island, including Flubber, What Dreams May Come, Patch Adams and Bicentennial Man as well as many other films staring other famous actors. With the development of commercial enterprises like The Winery SF, special events are starting to pop up more frequently, and there is a palpable buzz!

Building one depicted as airport Flughaffen in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

The Grand Dynamics SF office is located in Building One, which is a Streamline Modern-styled remnant of the World’s Fair and is one of the few buildings remaining from the exposition.

The Equinox Resort & Spa offers ideal corporate retreat destination in New England

Monday, April 11th, 2011

When I started my branch of Grand Dynamics International (GDI) in Middlebury, Vermont, I thought to myself, what resorts are in located less then 3-4 hours from NYC and Boston that could help me promote our corporate team building services.  I made it a priority to connect with as many resorts as possible that had the following criteria; a spa, hiking or nature preserve on property or near by, a golf course, conference facilities, wireless internet throughout the hotel, AAA 4 diamond awards, a pond or water source and above and beyond guest services. The Equinox met and exceeded all of these expectation, so I sent them a packet of information about GDI and waited for a response. One week later I received a call from Janet Walsh telling me that she was interested in our services and thought it would be beneficial to bring me in and present to the sales team. This was the break I was looking for and the moment of truth of whether or not this entrepreneurial venture was going to fail or succeed.

When I first arrived on property I was overwhelmed with the beauty and the grand size of the hotel. It was exactly like what the pictures on the web displayed. So I took the first hour to walk around the property and while doing so I set a couple of way points with my hand held GPS unit to set up a mock Teaming With GPS event  so that the sales team could get a taste of what we could provide for their clients. After my presentation on the events, activities and services  I set the sales team loose to go and find as many way points as they could in 20 minutes. The experience was a success because when all the teams arrived at the finish line each sales rep was laughing and smiling about what they had just completed.

The Equinox Resort & Spa had everything that we were looking for when delivering events and now that we had created a strategic partnership as their preferred team building provider it allowed us to start creating  customized events on property. These events include our Amazing Race Adventure which highlight the Land Rover off road driving school, Orvis fly fishing headquarters, the falconry and the 80 acres of hiking trails. Change of Perspective which is a photographic scavenger hunt around the property and our  Team Expedition which takes participants up to the pond pavilion area to have kayak races and fly fishing contests.

So to all of you who work at The Equinox Resort & Spa we really value our partnership and thank you for the opportunity to provide a great experience for your hundreds of guest all year round. We look forward to the many years of successful programs a head of us.

Will Leggett & The Grand Dynamics International Team
