Towering above Jackson Hole at 13,770 feet, the Grand Teton is one of North America's most famous and coveted summits. A climb on this iconic peak is never easy, and a successful ascent is a memorable achievement. GDI partners with the Exum Mountain Guides to provide the technical skills and guiding for your two days of training, and your two day ascent. The approach for climbing the Grand Teton is one that emphasizes participation and teamwork, an approach that guarantees an increased sense of satisfaction in climbing the Grand Teton, and a critical component when climbers are belaying one another as a single roped party.
Our Grand Adventure Guides are hand-picked Exum Mountain Guides who have worked with Grand Dynamics International for several years and are aligned with our philosophy of leadership, teamwork, psychology and experiential learning. Our team will infuse goal setting and peak performance strategies into the training days and ascent for an experience well beyond the traditional mountain climb. August 18th: Arrival into Jackson Hole! Evening Arrival and Registration: You'll begin your experience in Jackson Hole by meeting your team and creating positive momentum for the days ahead.
August 19th: Day 1: Multi-Pitch Level I: Welcome to the stellar setting of The Grand Adventure "classroom"--the slabs, cliffs, and surrounding peaks at Hidden Falls, a mile west of Jenny Lake in Grand Teton National Park.
Multi-Pitch Level I is designed to teach all of the basic introductory skills to our climbers, and to help you acquire the additional skills necessary for outdoor, "real-world" crag climbing and mountaineering. Multi-Pitch Level I is a full-day course that covers the fundamentals of climbing, including equipment, tie-ins and knots, rope management, footwork and movement, belaying, rappelling, and the all-important transitions during multi-pitch climbs.
August 20th - Day 2: Multi-Pitch Level II: You'll begin your day with a boat ride across the scenic Jenny Lake where inspirational multi-pitch climbs await. Multi-Pitch Level II classes both refine and take the skills learned in Multi-Pitch Level I to a whole new level. The climbs are steeper, the rappels more challenging, and the pace accelerated to simulate the level of efficiency demanded on multi-pitch alpine climbs like the Grand Teton. Based on the climbing skills, rope management, and belaying proficiency you demonstrate in Multi-Pitch Level II, your guide will determine the most appropriate route for you up the Grand Teton. This ensures that Exum groups climbing the Grand Teton are evenly matched, creating a more positive experience for everyone involved in the climb.
August 21st - Day 3: The Approach: This is the day where we enjoy the beautiful seven-mile, 5,000-foot approach to the Lower Saddle between the Middle and Grand Teton. The hike winds through pristine valleys and climbs steeply through hillsides blanketed in wildflowers and past gorgeous waterfalls. The group travels at a "guide's pace" to conserve energy and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow teammates. You'll arrive at a base camp hut stocked with sleeping bags, pads, climbing gear, and cooking equipment. After a simple dinner, we will enjoy the sunset across Idaho and take in the view of the inviting Grand Teton above. It's early to bed because the next day is the one we've been dreaming about! August 22nd - Day 4: The Ascent:We rise at 3 a.m. to wolf down some breakfast and warm drinks and begin our ascent - in the dark. Which route we follow will depend on the weather and the speed of the group - either the historic Owen Spalding, by which the mountain was first climbed, or the acclaimed Exum Ridge. Along the Exum ridge you'll experience "Wall Street (the long ramp across the gap to begin the route), the Golden Staircase (perfect golden knobs glistening in the sun), the infamous friction pitch (more beautiful granite), and the incredible final ridgeline toward the top of the world... By mid-morning you will be standing on top of the most awe-inspiring summit you can imagine!
If your breath isn't taken away yet, it will be as you marvel at extraordinary views of three states--Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana. After enjoying a victory snack and celebratory summit photo, we will begin the descent, where we rappel and down-climb for several hours back to the base camp. We enjoy a brief lunch, then pack up and begin the hike back down to the valley, and arrive at the trailhead in time for dinner. A big hearty dinner at that!
August 23:Re-engagement: You'll consider how far you've come and how to use the Grand Adventure Strategy to propel you forward with massive momentum for new goals and adventures in your personal and professional life!
